Starbucks carcinogenic wave

The reason is that a non-profit organization called "Council for Education and Research on Toxics" has been suing coffee companies for 8 years, involving 90 companies, including Starbucks. The organization believes that these companies are violating California regulations and do not warn consumers that their coffee products contain chemicals that may be carcinogenic, because the coffee beans produce a chemical, acrylamide, during the baking process.


Then, what is acrylamide and how much it affects the human body?


Li Shuguang, a professor at the school of public health, Fudan University, told the surging journalist that acrylamide is a poisonous chemical. In 2002, Swedish scientists discovered for the first time that fried potato chips and chips were easy to form acrylamide by chemical reaction. Since then, scientists have found that many foods, especially high temperature cooking foods containing rich carbohydrates, contain acrylamide.


"However, ordinary people are concerned about whether they contain this substance, and the industry is concerned about the dosage." Li Shuguang said that acrylamide was listed as a 2A carcinogen at the international cancer research center in 1994, which is potentially carcinogenic to humans, but there is still a lack of epidemiological evidence that "there is a clear correlation between the intake of acrylamide on food and the occurrence of some human tumor."


According to a report issued by the State Administration of food and Drug Administration in July 2014, experts from the national food safety risk assessment center and the Institute of food science and nutrition engineering at the China Agricultural University believe that acrylamide is neurotoxic to both humans and animals, and that animals have reproductive toxicity, mutagenicity and carcinogenicity.


"Popularly speaking, now academia is only studying in animals, and it is found that this substance may cause cancer, but it can not cause cancer in humans." Li Shuguang said.


It is interesting that in 2016, the international cancer research organization will organize experts to reevaluate coffee as the three category carcinogen.


Fan Zhihong, a food safety expert at China Agricultural University, introduced that the content of acrylamide in coffee is very high, reaching 1100 micrograms per kilogram. But after all, only two or three grams of coffee in 1 cups of coffee, 1100 times 0.003, the result is 3.3 micrograms. There is no need to mind this amount. This kind of product, or the occasional addiction is better. " Fan Zhihong said.


On the evening of March 31st, Starbucks China sent a media statement to the news of surging, saying that for the decision of the court, the coffee association of the United States has issued a notice.


According to the announcement, the whole coffee industry is currently considering various responses, including continuing appeals and further legal actions.


It is said that the carcinogenic warning labels on coffee products will be a misleading consumer's behavior. "Coffee has long been proven to be a healthful drink," said William Murray, chairman and chief executive of the National Coffee Industry Association. The legal lawsuit produced a ridiculous result.
